Course Synopsis

The course will focus on advanced photography involving more ambitious exercises in studio and outdoor photography, panoramic photography, photo-montage and photo-tricks, photo-journalism, film making and slides cinematography. Colour photography and colour processing. At this level students are expected to apply their previous knowledge on both analogue and digital photography to studio and outdoor photographic exercise, by exploring the use of light effects, moods and characterization of models, learning to find the right exposure, exploiting natural light sources, taking pictures with a camera flash and other types of artificial light sources. They are expected also to do further study on equipment like; batteries, flash synchronization slaves shutters speed cables, reflectors and finally the use of electricity, flash maintenance and safety. Further practical activities in digital photography will now follow which will involve the processing of digital images, managing digital images – editing, printing and archiving digital images, all of these are expected to reflect in an end of semester project.

It is expected to meet the students need for the production of prototype ceramics which can be reproduced using working plaster of Paris for mass production of ceramic products that have uniformity in shapes, light in weight and easily reproduced without stress. As a practical course of study, it will improve the skill of students in body preparation for plastic and non-plastic materials, slip property control and casting using plastic of Paris mould. The topics that are to be covered include identification of different raw materials, processing using different types of machinery for the process of milling, slip property control, mould making, drying of cast object and firing in different types of kilns under different firing atmosphere.

This course is an expository course in ceramic industrial practice which builds upon the students’ freshly acquired experience from their Industrial Attachment program. It covers some general areas such as management and marketing. However, it also meets essentially the need of the ceramic students as a course that provides the knowledge they require to set up or thrive in existing ceramic small and medium scale industry. The course deals with among other topics, the feasibility study on how to set up small, medium and large scale ceramic industries. It includes the study of production planning, and the layout of ceramic workshop/ studio. The course also builds the students’ knowledge of basic ceramic equipment, its maintenance and acquisition. The course also treats ceramic entrepreneurship, teaching the students how to employ alternative sales media such as the use of exhibitions and setting up of galleries. Finally the course discusses the role of ceramic professional associations at national and international levels.

Professional ethics with emphasis on digital 3D modeling techniques. Students will be introduced to the use of movie window, the timeline and clip viewers. Different panes (clips, photo, audio, titles, transition, effects and DVD) will be used. Practicals will involve producing short animated film from cartoon frames. Principles of developing storyboards as basis for all cartoon stripes will be explored with students during the course of this programme at the end of this course students will submit both group and individual assignments based on their experiences exploring the different panes that will form the thrust of training.

Course Synopsis

This is a compulsory course which is developed upon its foundational introductory aspect at 400 level which involve process of making industrial ceramics anchored on material sourcing, processing, formulation and forming through pre-determined working mould generated from a model prototype. As a practical course, it is focused on developing the right plastic and non-plastic material that can be put together to form a stable ceramics ware in plaster of Paris mould. The right quality control procedure will be developed using appropriate laboratory equipment such as ball mill, blungers, kilns, torsion viscometer, hydrometer, plasticimeter, MOR machine, abrasive machine and thermosil for drying. Useful skills such as clay slip property control in terms of viscosity and thisotrophy. Adjustment of this slip control on property will be practised. Topics that cover such areas as making models like cup, casseroles, jug and mugs, flower vases and planters, animated objects will be emphasised using the throwing wheel, hand built or jigger and jollying machine.
